Lowenbrau Porsche 911 GT3R

Lowenbrau_911GT3R-59.jpg

I absolutely love digging through cool race footage looking for liveries that time has forgotten. Just yesterday, I was watching a documentary called, “Bad Sport: Need for Weed”, about the true story of Randy Lanier, who won the 1984 IMSA Camel GT series as a privateer, and funded the race team by smuggling marijuana. It was especially notable because he beat the factory Porsche team, running the venerable 962, with racing legend Derek Bell driving. The Porsche 962 was running the Lowenbrau livery and when I saw it, it instantly turned on a light bulb in my head. The Lowenbrau 962 was ahead of its time and was really pretty dramatic compared to other liveries in the mid 80’s. The white and royal blue is always a classic color combination and when you couple that with the other iconic Lowenbrau colors, sky blue and gold, you land on a livery that looks good in any generation.

Advan Ferrari 488 EVO GT3

Advan_488EVO_final-58.jpg

This iconic red and black Advan livery is one of my all-time favorite liveries. I think it is because it was so frequently used in the Advan advertisements in the Japanese tuning magazines and import magazines I read in my youth.
I took a slightly different approach on this version though, replacing the black with a matte carbon fiber. A lot of these GT3 race cars are delivered from the manufacturer to the team with just a raw carbon shell and the livery is usually just a vinyl wrap. I wanted this design to look as though the team had just applied the glossy, vinyl wrap to the rear portion, leaving the black front in the matte carbon fiber. It is subtle, but I really like the result.

Team RLL BMW M8 GTLM

One of the coolest aspects of iRacing is that you can replicate and race many of the current cars in the IMSA and WEC paddock. Last year, I recreated the 2020 livery of the Team RLL BMW Motorsport M8 GTLM in both the red and black livery versions. They have proven to be two of my most popular livery designs on Trading Paints.

In previous IMSA seasons, the GTLM category has shown us some of the best racing in quite some time. Unfortunately, many of the manufacturers have pulled support in 2021 as they get ready to construct cars for the LMDH category in the next year or two. In 2021, Team RLL is only racing in the endurance racing events: 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, 6 Hours of the Glen and Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta, so we have limited races to enjoy them, but on iRacing, we can race them whenever we want.

Turner Motorsports BMW Z4 GT3

TurnerLiquiMoly Z4 GT3-58.jpg

Last year, when the world was deep in the depths of Covid, I was watching tons of IMSA races from previous seasons, and during that time, I really became a fan of the Turner Motorsports BMW team. I wanted to race as the Turner Motorsports team in the iRacing VRS GT3 series, but iRacing didn’t have the M6 GT3. They only had the older Z4 GT3.

I thought it would be cool to adapt the red, white and blue Liqui-Moly Turner Motorsports livery to the Z4 GT3. It proved to be a challenging exercise, but ultimately ended up being a car that I really liked and enjoyed racing.

SNEAK Energy AMG GT3

SNEAK_AMG_Final-57.jpg

Check out this freshly completed Mercedes AMG GT3 with a livery for SNEAK Energy drink. The client reached out to me with interest for this design and said I could have total control and freedom to design the car as I see fit. As a designer, this is so cool and it feels so good when a client has trust in what I’ll do. SNEAK has such a strong design language with several different styles, so it was fun to explore the brand and find something that I liked and then try to adapt that to the AMG GT3.

If you want to race this paint, you can find it on Trading Paints.

#GridLife C7 Daytona Prototype

RedOrangeC7Proto-51.jpg

Over the winter, the guys from #GridLife put together some amazing iRacing events. They usually schedule them as a series of races with a theme. Last year, they put together a series called the Momo Prototype Challenge that was sponsored by Momo, with prizes for racers and even give aways to fans and spectators. The level of professionalism and organization of the races is on par with any sim racing presentation I’ve seen and the races are usually fun and entertaining.

Many of the racers have their own liveries, but for the guys that don’t have a team livery or might not be creative enough to put something together on their own, I put together a series of liveries that look good and give some props to the organization. There is nothing worse than watching a broadcast race and seeing plain, white liveries. This blog post features a few of the liveries that I designed for the Corvette C7 Daytona Prototype.

Tic-Tac BMW M4 GT4

TicTacM4-55.jpg

A few months back I came across this photo of an E30 M3 done up in a green Tic-Tac livery and thought that it would be cool to recreate and adapt that livery to the M4 GT4 with modern graphics and modern design. The green Tic-Tac livery is so eye-catching on track and I had to copy the green wheels as well.

EatSleepRace Porsche 992 Cup Car

ESR_Cement992Cup-58.jpg

It is always a lot of fun mixing the styles of two different worlds into one.

I have done probably dozens of designs for EatSleepRace. I grew up with the owners of the company, building and racing our sport compact cars and I’m always amazed at how they’ve taken their passion for cars and turned it into a thriving business. As a teenager, the founder of EatSleepRace, Brian, was a huge sneakerhead, always camping out to collect the most hard to get kicks.

This Porsche 992 Cup Car merges the sneaker world and motorsports world together and channels the power of the #GOAT #23.

Blaupunkt Porsche 911 GT3R

Blaupunkt_BLK_Porsche-57.jpg

I really enjoy looking at old race car liveries and imagining how they might look on modern race cars. These Porsche 911 GT3R’s are inspired by the Blaupunkt Porsche 962 from the mid-80’s. Blaupunkt is a German audio company started in 1924, when radio was still in its infancy and, whose name translates to “blue point” in English. The blue dot was a symbol that the radio had gone through a strict quality control test and had passed, so looking for the “Blaupunkt” became an automatic.

I couldn’t decide which version of the original 962 looked better, the black or the white, so I did both.

You can race the black Blaupunkt 911 GT3R here and you can race the white Blaupunkt 911 GT3R here.

Phoenix Porsche GT Team

PhoenixPorsche-55.jpg

I recently completed this matching pair of Porsche GT race cars for the Phoenix racing team. The client had this idea for a Phoenix that was created using geometric shapes. We went back and forth with a few different concepts, but ultimately found this perfect mix that is clearly a Phoenix while still being slightly abstract. The bright red combined with the satin silver is always a winning look on track and it looks great on both the Porsche 911 GT3R and Cayman 718 GT4 Clubsport.

Grid by Simlab - 992 Cup Car

Over the last 12 months, I’ve painted this livery design on quite a few cars for Grid Engineering, a number of them being Porsches. I knew that with the announcement of the 992 Cup Car, Brandon from Grid would be interested in getting another one done, so it was no surprise when he reached out to me. The big surprise though, was the announcement that Grid was partnering with Sim-Lab, so this design takes on a little shift in terms of the logo and slight change in design. I’m so stoked to see big things happening for Grid and I think this collaboration with Sim-Lab will bring some exciting new products to the sim racing community.

GPX Testing Camo - 992 Cup Car

GPXCamo992-58.jpg

This livery design is inspired the Testing Camo livery designed by Sean Bull Design for GPX Racing. It was revealed in March of 2021, on the 911 GT3R, for the pre-season test session and the original artwork is so unique and detailed, it would almost impossible to re-create exactly on a virtual car, if you didn’t have the original art.
I thought it would be cool to do my own artwork, inspired by the look, but not an exact replica. If you want to run this livery on the 992 Cup Car, you can get it here on Trading Paints. I also have a version of this paint on the 911 GT3R, which is the car this artwork was originally designed for.

Advan Porsche 992 Cup Car

Advan992-58.jpg

2021 Season 4 sees iRacing launch the Porsche 992 Cup Car. This car started racing in real life just this year and I’ve been eagerly awaiting the virtual version. The iRacing version does not disappoint. It is so much fun to drive, difficult but rewarding.

Growing up in the tuner car era, Yokohama’s performance brand, Advan, always had the best advertising and they had such a mystique about their race performance. The black and red chevron livery adorned Porsche cars that were raced in the JGTC series in Japan.

Random Vandals Racing M4 GT4

RandomVandalsGT4_edit-59.jpg

A few weeks ago, I was out on a bike ride with my local cycling group and after the ride was over, while we were having coffee, I struck up a conversation with a fellow cyclist I had previously never met. It turned out that he is a driver for the Random Vandals Racing team BMW M4 GT4, competing in the American Endurance Series and SRO Pirelli GT4 America. The BMW M4 GT4 is one of my favorite cars to drive on iRacing and when I found out that several of the drivers on the team use iRacing to learn new tracks, I knew I had to design a recreation.

The real life car livery design was done by RabidWraps and the chrome green looks amazing.

EatSleepRace M-stripe M4 GT3

ESR_MStripe-56.jpg

The three stripes of BMW’s M motorsport division are some of the most iconic colors in motorsport. The blue comes from the Bavarian Flag, the region of Germany where BMWs are built. The red comes from the Texaco oil company’s logo, BMW’s first racing partner. The center stripe represents where the two colors merge in the middle.
If you’ve had a look around my Trading Paints, you’ll see that I do a number of livery designs for EatSleepRace. EatSleepRace is a car culture and clothing company that was started by some good friends of mine. I’m constantly amazed and inspired by the way they’ve grown their passion for cars from something that started in their parent’s driveways and basements to a clothing company that touches the highest forms of motorsport.

This BMW M4 GT3 seeks to merge the M-stripes and EatSleepRace just the way the very M-Stripes colors were merged, transforming the EatSleepRace logo into M-Stripes over a beautiful satin silver.

Brumos Porsche 911 GT3

BrumosGT3R_final-59.jpg

One of the first really iconic racing liveries that I can remember being aware of is that of Brumos Porsche. I remember being at Lime Rock as a kid, in maybe ‘86 and I got to sit in a Brumos Porsche in the pits.
In 2019, Porsche designed a bunch of their race cars for the 24H of Daytona and LeMans using cues from historic Porsche race cars and I immediately loved the design that incorporated the Brumos “59” in the iconic Brumos colors as racing stripes. When iRacing released the 911 GT3R, I thought it would be cool to imagine what it might look like if Brumos Porsche came back to IMSA racing in the GTD category.

Porsche GT3 RS

Porsche GT3 RS - Lava Orange

Porsche GT3 RS - Lava Orange

When I was a kid, the first “sim” game that I played that really captured my attention was the original Gran Turismo game on Sony Playstation. I had played tons of racing games prior to that, but Gran Turismo was the first to really replicate real cars. At that point in time, my friends and I were big in the import and sport compact tuning culture. We were doing engine swaps and turbo kits on our Honda Civics and Mitsubishi Eclipses and so the concept of starting off with a tame street car and modifying it and advancing it through the races in Gran Turismo really appealed my friends and I.

iRacing doesn’t really have street cars or the tuning aspect that Gran Turismo did, just pure race cars, but if there is a car in the iRacing service that is close to its street car brethren, it is probably the Porsche GT3 Cup Car. I thought it would be cool to do a version of the Porsche GT3 Cup Car that looked like a Porsche GT3 RS. I developed some carbon fiber hood fenders and a ducted and vented hood, all done with shadows and some spec mapping to control reflections and make them look more authentic and then I painted them in some of the iconic Porsche GT3 RS colors.

FCP Euro AMG GT3

FCPEuroAMG_GT3-57.jpg

On July 17th, I attended the IMSA Weathertech series races at Lime Rock Park with my son and brother. We saw some great races and a ton of beautiful race cars, but the car I was most impressed with was the FCP Euro AMG GT4 race car. FCP Euro is an online auto parts retailer specializing in European cars and they are one of the supporting sponsors of the Lime Rock Park facility, so they pulled out all of the stops for their home race and were doing a ton of fan friendly activities.

About half way through the IMSA Michelin Pilot Series Lime Rock Park 120 race, the FCP Euro team found themselves in the lead by way of some smart fuel strategy and maybe a little bit of gambling. After the race was over, we headed over to their trailer in the paddock area and got to meet the drivers and see the car up close. They even gave my son a signed poster that ended up being one of the highlights of the day.

Since iRacing doesn’t currently offer the AMG GT4, I decided to retrofit the FCP Euro livery to the AMG GT3. It was a fun process trying to get the livery to translate over the much more aggressive lines of the GT3 race car.

Go-Team Porsche team livery

GOTeamIMSA-57.jpg

The concept behind this team livery came from the colors of the French flag. The client wanted the design to be solid, chrome blue at the front, fading into hexagons that are traveling across the white area before collecting on the rear of the car as red hexagons that then fades back into solid, chrome red at the rear of the car.

The client loves to race Porsches and we designed both the 911 GT3R and 911 RSR with this livery.
